Search-and-rescue drones to use LiDar technology for Search & Rescue.

A fleet of drones can use lidar imaging tech to find their way when GPS is unavailable. Drones are already being used by the emergency services to help locate missing people. But in forests the densely packed trees can interfere with the drones' GPS connection, making their performance unreliable. In a bid to fix this, a group of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will this week present a paper on how lidar can be used to map, navigate and search areas where GPS cannot be used.   As reported by MIT News, each drone "is equipped with laser-range finders...

How Drones are Helping to Plant Trees - A Cleaner Future

Humans are cutting down 15 billion trees a year and replanting only 9 billion, creating an annual net loss of 6 billion trees. Planting trees by hand is time-consuming and expensive, making it difficult to keep up with bulldozers clear-cutting over 40 football fields of trees every minute. We’ve had impressive efforts, such as India planting 66 million trees in a day, but that was a large-scale event, which required organizing millions of volunteers. It would be difficult to recreate something like that on a regular basis. Luckily, a former NASA engineer has developed drones that can plant 100,000 trees per day each. Multiply that by 165 drones,...

A car is a horseless carriage and so borrowed from the horse terminology. The term “pilot” means to guide direction. We had pilots prior to air travel, for example, a boat or ship may have a pilot. A ship pilot is in charge of plotting the course and navigation decisions. A ship coming into a harbor will take on a harbor pilot to guide the ship into...
